Wana Sambo, Nigeria's Rising Fashion Star

From Chizitalu Uwechia, in London

Ms. Wana Sambo, the women's wear fashion designer who has had an incredible rise in Nigeria's fashion world seemingly from nowhere, has finally capped her success story with the launch of her first store in Lagos in April.   Wana Sambo is arguably one of the youngest and fastest rising fashion designers in Nigeria today. Her brand was officially launched into the Nigerian market at an exhibition in December 2010.

Recognizing very early the limitless opportunities offered by the Internet, Ms. Sambo first established an online outlet where she has developed a large clientele including Nigerians abroad before culminating in the flagship store at Lekki, Lagos, the launch of which was graced by celebrities, movie stars and fashion enthusiasts.

Sambo studied International Relations and Diplomacy at Igbinedion University, Edo state where she started “Wana Sambo Clothing Company” in her teenage years.  With a University education in a different field, Sambo's love and vision for fashion designing has been her greatest propelling force. She has received many awards for her work, including MSN's2012 title of ‘Nigeria's Fashion Future' and winner of 2013 – Ready-To-Wear Brand of the Year at Glitz Africa Fashion Week.  Her works have also been featured in many media publications in Nigeria, UK and South Africa. Ms. Sambo's success indicates how grit and determination, mixed with vision, hard work and consistency can serve Nigerian youth.
