Dr. Kase Lawal, Oil and Gas
Dr. Kase Lukman Lawal is the Chief Executive Officer of Houston-based CAMAC Energy, one of the largest black-owned businesses in the U.S.
The oil excutive was born in Ibadan, on June 30, 1954 and holds a bachelor's degree in Chemistry from Texas Southern University and an MBA in finance and marketing from A&M University, Prairie View, Texas. Dr. Lawal started out working for Shell Oil Refining Company, Dresser Industries (now Halliburton), Suncrest Investment Corporation and Baker Investments before starting his own business venture trading in sugar, tobacco and rice. In the 1990s, he diversified into oil and gas and today heads CAMAC which generates over $2 billion a year.
CAMAC Energy Inc. styles itself as an independent oil and gas exploration and production company focused on energy resources in Africa. It has exploration and other operations across four countries including Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya and Gambia. CAMAC Energy is listed on the New York Stock Exchange under the symbolCAK, and on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange asCME.
The Nigerian born, Dr. Lawal is described by CNN as the “epitome of the American dream” while Forbes magazine reports that he has previouslyserved as a commissioner on the Port of Houston Authority and currently serves as vice chairman of the Houston Airport Development System Corporation. He is also a member of the National Urban League's Board of Directors, a former member of the Fisk University Board of Trustees, and a former member of President Obama's Advisory Committee for Trade Policy and Negotiation. Dr. Lawal is a member of the board of directors and a majority shareholder in Unity National Bank, the only federally-insured and licensed African American-owned bank in Texas.
