Nigerians Mark 55th Independence in New York

Nigerians in United States put up a show October 24 in Manhattan, New York City as part of activities marking the country's 55th independence celebrations.

Organized under the aegis of Organization for the Advancement of Nigeria, the fun fair included parade floats, colorful dancers in cultural attires and many Nigerians from different walks of life including doctors, nurses, other professionals and non -Nigerians  who just wanted to be part of the fun.

The parade started at 54th street on Second Avenue and marched down to Nigeria House on 44th and Second Avenue.  The celebrations continue on Sunday with a festival of food, music and dance at the Dag Hammarskjold Plaza where various artists and cultural troupes are billed to perform.

Nigerian professional groups such as the Nurses Association in USA, the Association of Nigerian Physicians, ANPA and students from the New York University Dental School had service booths where they offered free medical screenings.

The yearly Nigeria Independence Day celebrations in New York started in 1991 and has grown to one of the biggest events of African immigrant groups in the USA.
